PODCAST: How Did We Not Say Victory Cigar? (The Colorado Recap)

Fank and Pope spend an entire podcast episode recapping Baylor's overtime loss to Colorado without once saying the phrase "Victory Cigar." How is that even possible?

Q: Dave, was that a breakdown at all on that Hail Mary pass, or was that what was called?
A: Yeah. We have, uh, what’s called “Victory Cigar,” it’s supposed to be that. We have to the quarterback’s hand, we’ll have an “up and under rush,” so there will be a contain rush on the outside that will be someone that will work up and then come under, so generally you get sprint-outs to the quarterback’s hand. So you’d work an up and under rush to try to flush him to someone that’s outside of him for contain. Then away from the quarterback’s hand you have a contain rush. We had an injury earlier in the game and so we had a backup in one of those spots … We call timeout before the play, and then we have the drawings of that play, and during the timeout we were showing the drawings, and we went to opposite sides. The guy that was up and under went away, and the guy that was contain went to the other side. And so when you watch that play, you’ll see someone come from the right and just go up and under. And that’s a shame. I have never seen that. I take full responsibility for that. I have to find a way to coach that better.

Unless you’ve been in hiding since the Colorado game, you’re at least familiar with the fact that Aranda let the media know that the Hail Mary defense play is called “Victory Cigar.” People were absolutely up in arms over his divulging this information late Saturday night, myself included, but in context it makes more sense than a tweet can do justice. But yeah… maybe don’t share the name of the play next time, Coach.

Anyway, we go a full hour with our recap and neglect to mention this once. I have never seen that, and I take full responsibility for that. I have to find a way to podcast that better.
