PODCAST: Not Good Enough
Fank and Pope recap a frustrating 34-28 Baylor football loss to BYU on Saturday.
On Saturday at about 11:20am, as a BYU defensive lineman batted the ball up in the air and another intercepted it, setting up the BYU offense with 1st-and-10 from the Baylor 20 yardline, the collective air was sucked out of what fans were present at McLane Stadium. “Oh brother, here we go again” seemed to be the collective thoughts of the fanbase. BYU made it 14-0, then 21-0 and ultimately 28-7 on four straight possessions. My thought was, “I thought we were past this.” I tweeted it. How could the team do this, yet again, with their coach’s job on the line? The thought that they would play yet another lifeless game infuriated me.
Only they didn’t play a lifeless game. There was a key difference in the team in this game versus the 2022 post-K-State and 2023 teams: they picked themselves up off the mat. They kept fighting. The defense spotted BYU 28 points, but then bowed up and only allowed 6 more. Down 6 points, the defense gave the offense the best shot they were going to get in the form of an Elinus Noel interception at the BYU 45 yardline. The offense couldn’t get it done. The defense stood strong again, forcing another three-and-out, giving the ball back to the offense with just under 90 seconds on the clock, but an interception ended the threat.
The Bears need to find ways to win games… or (in the case of Colorado) keep from losing them. They’re close.
